Research focus
Adipocytic tumors are the most prevalent soft tissue tumor, and present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their heterogeneity. Distinguishing benign lipomas from intermediate atypical lipomatous tumors (such as spindle cell and pleomorphic variants) and liposarcomas is of major importance, as these tumors have different characteristics and therapeutic strategies. However, the rarity of intermediate and malignant subtypes often leads to misclassification. The lack of standardized diagnostic and follow-up guidelines further complicates patient care, as recurrence rates and dedifferentiation potential vary between tumor subtypes and surgical interventions.
The aim of my research is to:
Identify patients at risk with potential dedifferentiating and locally recurrent lipomatous tumors.
Develop more precise and evidence-based guidelines for patient referral and follow-up care.
Develop therapeutic guidelines for biopsy procedures, resection margins, and potential further treatment.
This research is a retrospective study based on clinical data.
Biography
I obtained a MSc. in Biomedical sciences (major oncology) in 2024 at the university of Ghent. I performed my master’s dissertation at the laboratory of experimental cancer research (LECR) focusing on the viability and influence of culture media on in vitro patient-derived sarcoma tissue models and cell lines. Furthermore, I contributed to the Ghent living biobank – Sarcoma (GLB-S) between 2022 and 2024. Since January 2025, I started this PhD research under supervision of Prof. Gwen Sys at the University of Ghent.
