TRINCE Bio nominated for the prestigious Nature Magazine Spinoff Prize!

CRIG

TRINCE (which stands for TRansfer INto CElls) is a Ghent University spin-off founded in December 2021 developing groundbreaking technology to deliver functional molecules into living cells for faster treatment. More specifically, TRINCE optimizes photoporation, a physical transfection method based on the interaction between pulsed laser light and photothermal nanosensitizers as an alternative transfection method to viral vectors and electroporation.

The main advantage of this photoporation technology is its gentle nature preserving cell viability and quality, which is key in GMP-compliant clinical settings for applications such as cell and gene therapy. Prof Kevin Braeckmans (CSO TRINCE & CRIG group leader) has a longstanding collaboration with CRIG group leader Prof. Bart Vandekerckhove (Director CellGENTherapies, the GMP unit Cell Therapy) which in 2023 crystallized in a granted VLAIO R&D grant, in which multidisciplinary work together with Prof Kristiaan Neyts aims towards  ‘Successful engineering of human T cells with large effector molecules (plasmids, mRNA and CRISPR/Cas9 RNPs) while preserving T cell fitness and therapeutic efficacy’. Strong and durable collaborations between TRINCE Bio and immune-oncology & cell therapy experts within CRIG have not only strengthened the immune-oncology hub in Ghent, but also contributed to the success of the spin-off.

TRINCE Bio is the only European company in the shortlist of four nominees for the prestigious Nature Magazine Spinoff Prize 2024. This award is given to spinoff companies that translate innovative research in life sciences and physical sciences into practical solutions with a big social impact. On July 10, Prof. Kevin Braeckmans will defend TRINCE Bio at the Curious2024 – Future Insight™ conference in Mainz, Germany. Fingers crossed!
