‘Schermen voor Liesbet’ raises record amount of 40 000 EUR for stem cell transplantation research

CRIG

Already in April, we announced the wonderful initiative ‘Schermen voor Liesbet’, a benefit organised by the family and friends of Liesbet Coysman who died in October 2020 after years of treatment for breast cancer and chronic lymphatic leukaemia.

Liesbet's sons, Jurre and Ties, are both fencing talents and therefore chose to organise the benefit around their favourite sport. Thus, there was fencing initiation all weekend, and enthusiasts could pay for a fencing match against real fencing champions, such as Freek Braeckman and Olympic fencer Max Hartung.

It was a wonderful and sunny weekend, with not only fencing, but also a big auction and tombola, science, games for children, music, super delicious pancakes ... and above all lots of warm people and cosiness.

And as if that weekend wasn't enough, there was also a concert in De Panne, the sale of egg liquor and jam, a bicycle tour...

All initiatives together yielded no less than 40 000 (!) EUR, 4 times their original ambitious target of 10 000 EUR. This money will be used, at the request of Liesbet's family, to support the stem cell transplant research of CRIG group leader Prof. Tessa Kerre and colleagues and to upgrade the bathrooms of the hemato-oncology department.

There was also a lot of attention in the press for this great campaign (in Dutch):
