'Laureaat van de Klasse van de Natuurwetenschappen' is one of the most prestigious awards of the KVAB (De Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten) that honours young, promising researchers whose main activity is located in Flanders.
This year, the award 'Laureaat van de Klasse van de Natuurwetenschappen' goes to CRIG group leader prof. Pieter Van Vlierberghe!

The research of Prof. Van Vlierberghe focuses on acute leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer that mainly occurs in children. Today, this type of leukemia is treated with complex and long-term chemotherapy. These treatments are very toxic and stressful because of the many side effects they cause. The identification of new genetic abnormalities that lie at the basis of the development of this aggressive form of childhood cancer can lead to more targeted and less toxic drugs. These improved medicines will ensure a greater chance of survival and a brighter future for children who suffer from this terrible disease.

In 2018, prof. Pieter Van Vlierberghe also received the prestigious Baillet Latour Grant for Medical Research for his work.
