Prof. Pieter Van Vlierberghe awarded by the Fund Baillet Latour

CRIG

To stimulate the medical research in Belgium, the Fund Baillet Latour yearly awards a scholarship to a young group leader to realize a research project at a Belgian University or University Hospital. This year, the scholarship is awarded to prof. Pieter Van Vlierberghe (UGent, CRIG) for his research on the role of the transcription factor cMYB in the development of acute T-cell leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer that often affects children. His team significantly contributed to the identification of novel genetic defects that cause this type of leukemia, which can in turn lead to the development of novel, more targeted and less toxic drugs that guarantee higher survival rates.
