My research focus is on “Computation fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) and electrostatic precipitation pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (ePIPAC)”.
PIPAC is a new and innovative drug delivery method developed to treat peritoneal metastasis using laparoscopy. During PIPAC, a CO2 pneumoperitoneum is established (12-15 mmHg) to inflate the abdominal cavity. Then, drug-containing solution is aerosolized within the inflated abdominal cavity by means of a microinjection pump (MIP®) in combination with a high-pressure injector to obtain a homogeneous aerosol distribution within the peritoneal cavity. Extensive research on PIPAC in preclinical (in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo) and clinical settings has been done, but numerical PIPAC modelling to analyze intraperitoneal aerosol behavior has been missing.
As a part of my PhD-project, we have developed CFD simulation for PIPAC and ePIPAC techniques at UZ Gent- Ghent University to observe the effects of different parameters on aerosol particles behavior and transport in abdominal cavity.
