Research focus
Mammography remains to main method for the detection of breast cancer. However, the technique often proves challenging with a high rate of false positive and false negative diagnoses or overdiagnosis. Additionally, the technique is experienced as considerably unpleasant.
My research aims to identify biomarkers that are exposed on circulating extracellular vesicles from cancer cells. To characterize such surface exposed biomarkers would allow us to develop a non-invasive and straightforward diagnostic test towards the accurate and sensitive detection of breast cancer or even to subtype it.
Biography
Jarne Pauwels received his M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Biotechnology in 2013 at Ghent University (Belgium) with a focus on biochemistry, structural biology, and organic chemistry.
After graduating, he started as a mass spectrometer operator and data analyst at VIB's Proteomics Core within the Department of Biomolecular Medicine (Ghent University) and the VIB‐UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology under the supervision of Kris Gevaert.
In 2020 and in the same department Jarne started his Ph.D.‐studies that are aimed at mapping the surfaceome of extracellular vesicles originating from breast cancer cells.
