Research focus

Jens Debacker (MD, PhD) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Head and Neck Research group within the UGent Department of Head and Skin, and an assistant research professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel Molecular Imaging and Therapy (MITH) research group. He obtained his medical degree in 2018 at Ghent University before starting a PhD in the same university's Head and Neck Surgery research group. During his PhD, he investigated the potential role of nuclear medicine in head and neck cancer surgery and radiotherapy. He focused on characterising the heterogeneous uptake of radiopharmaceuticals in human malignancies, which drove his interest in fundamental radiobiology. After obtaining his PhD in Medical Sciences in 2022, he now focuses on translational nuclear medicine to improve oncological patient care. Specifically, he focuses on identifying the underlying mechanisms of radio(nuclide) therapy to improve patient care for patients diagnosed with a malignancy of the head and neck.
