Proton therapy for cancer patients now accessible in Belgium

CRIG

Using proton therapy, a tumor can be treated in a very targeted manner, so that the surrounding healthy tissue is maximally spared. The therapy is on the rise worldwide and is used when surrounding tissue must receive as little radiation damage as possible - for example in children with cancer or in patients with a tumor close to vital or vulnerable organs such as the brain or the eyes.

Cancer patients can now receive proton therapy in their own country in the new proton therapy center PARTICLE in Leuven. Next to patient treatment, also research projects will be facilitated at the center. Six university hospitals - including Ghent University Hospital - and their network hospitals work together.
