The development of the new Demetra dermatoscope for early detection of skin cancer

CRIG

The UZ Gent dermatology team (Sofie Mylle, Nele Maes, Rani Soenen, prof. Evelien Verhaeghe, prof. Lieve Brochez) contributed, together with UZ Leuven Dermatology, to the development of a new dermatoscope "Demetra" developed by Barco for early detection of skin cancer. In a VLAIO R&D project, the team gave input over the past 2 years on a workflow for dermatologist evaluation for skin cancer as well as on the quality of images. They started with the construction of an image bank that should ultimately contribute to automatic diagnostic classification through neural networks. Over the next 2 years, the team will continue to work on VLAIO R&D on the clinical validation of the device and on extending it to new indications such as body mapping and surface measurement of skin lesions.
