A boost for brain cancer research at CRIG and other projects supported by FWO-SBO 2024 funding

CRIG

Each year, FWO (Funds for Scientific Research) Vlaanderen organizes a call for SBO projects (strategic basic research projects with primary social finality). The aim is to support innovative research that, in the event of scientific success, gives rise to economic or social applications (in the form of a new generation of products, processes and/or services).

We are proud to announce that 3 projects with CRIG teams involved are supported by an FWO-SBO 2024 grant.

In the 'GlioSELECT' project, teams from KULeuven and CRIG (UGent) will develop a multi-omic single-cell, functional precision oncology platform to guide personalised medicine in high-grade brain tumors. On the CRIG side, the team of Prof. Robrecht Raedt will take the lead. Importantly, CRIG awarded a partnership grant to Prof. Raedt and the UZ Gent neurosurgery team (Dr. Giorgio Hallaert and colleagues) for the project 'Coordinated Undermining of Survival Pathways (CUSP) in glioblastoma' (read more). The first results obtained with this CRIG seed funding have been instrumental in obtaining the current larger FWO-SBO project, further demonstrating the leverage effect of the CRIG partnership grant initiative.

  • 'GlioSELECT - A multi-omic single-cell, functional precision oncology platform to guide personalised medicine in high-grade brain tumors'. Joint project between KULeuven (1 646 243 EUR - promotors Frederik De Smet, Thierry Voet, Jeroen Lammertyn, Paul Clement, Alejandro Sifrim, Steven De Vleeschouwer) and UGent/CRIG (595 903 EUR - promotor Robrecht Raedt)

In addition, two other FWO-SBO project were granted in which CRIG principal investigators are involved. These projects do not entirely focus on cancer research but have important applications in oncology (for which collaborations within CRIG are in place).

  • 'INNATE-GAP: a next-generation humanized mouse model for closing the translational gap in innate immunity research'. Joint project between UAntwerpen (992 065 EUR - promotors Andy Wullaert & Pierre Van Damme) and UGent (695 083 EUR - promotors Lindsey Devisscher & Hans Van Vlierberghe)
  • 'Development of an AI-driven Spatial Analysis Pipeline (ASAP)'. Joint project between UGent (1 816 548 EUR - promotors Martin Guilliams, Anne Hoorens, Yvan Saeys & Charlotte Scott) and KULeuven (823 941 EUR - promotors Sarah-Maria Fendt & Jean-Christophe Marine)

All granted SBO projects can be found on the FWO website via this link. Congratulations to all awarded projects and teams!
