Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most lethal of all gynaecologic malignancies. This poor prognosis is mainly due to a delayed diagnosis resulting in advanced stage of disease and frequent therapy-resistant relapses.
Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process by which polarized epithelial cells lose their epithelial junctions and become migratory mesenchymal cells.
Gene expression data analysis of human ovarian cancers identified that an EMT gene signature is linked with a significantly shorter overall survival and relapse-free survival. We will further explore this mechanism by investigating if EMT is associated with tumor initiation, tumor progression, recurrence and drug resistance in human epithelial ovarian cancer lesions.
In 2014 I graduated as a medical doctor and initiated the specialization of gynaecology and obstetrics. After two years of clinical experience, I took the challenge to start a PhD on epithelial ovarian cancer.
