Research focus

Skin cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in the world, and its incidence is still rising. Melanomas have a lower incidence but have the potential to metastasize and are thus responsible for most skin cancer-related deaths. On the other hand, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) have a better prognosis, but only if identified at an early stage. Early detection and treatment are key to improve both morbidity and mortality but remain a challenge in daily practice. A total body screening in the general population is considered not cost-effective. Our research group already suggested lesion-direct screening as an alternative strategy. Of increasing interest are several tools, like smartphone applications, that use inbuilt algorithms (so-called artificial intelligence) and claim to assist both patients and clinicians in making a risk assessment or diagnosis. However, the performance and value of these tools in daily practice have been insufficiently studied.

This research will focus on optimalization and clinical validation of new tools or devices in skin cancer diagnostics.
