Research focus

In 2015, a consortium from KU Leuven (prof. dr. Veerle Foulon) and UGent (prof. dr. Ann Van Hecke) started a pilot project supported by Kom Op Tegen Kanker, COllaborative Network to Take responsibility for oral Anti-Cancer Therapy (CONTACT-1). This multicenter before-after study aims at developing, implementing and evaluating a care pathway in four hospitals in Flanders for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs. Meanwhile, all hospitals have implemented their care pathway.  The current project will focus on the investigation of the impact of the implementation and on the further follow-up of the pilot hospitals to guarantee sustainability of the care pathway. Furthermore, the development and implementation of a care pathway will be expanded to eleven additional hospitals in Flanders (CONTACT-2). Unlike the four pilot hospitals, the CONTACT-2 hospitals will take the lead in the development, implementation and evaluation of the care pathway, supported by the research team and by the CONTACT-toolkit that has been developed based on the experiences from CONTACT-1 and international guidelines on the implementation of care pathways. Further research in the CONTACT-1 and CONTACT-2 hospitals insight in the crucial factors for sustainable implementation of a care pathway, as well as to definite conclusions on its impact for patients and HCPs.
