prof. Sarah Raevens (MD, PhD)

The clinical research work of Sarah Raevens focuses on improvement of identification, risk stratification and management of cirrhosis, which is the most important risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma, portal hypertension, and their complications. 
She currently leads two major international studies at UZ Gent, working in close collaboration with partners in France to combat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Her work includes the PERCEPTION2 study, which evaluates the quality of life for patients living with HCC, and the FASTRAK study, which investigates Fast MRI as an innovative screening tool for detecting HCC in patients with cirrhosis.
Her preclinical research work mainly focuses on vascular biology in the pathophysiology of these diseases, using different animal models of chronic liver disease. 
 

Sarah Raevens is a hepatologist at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Ghent University Hospital and Senior Clinical Investigator at the Hepatology Research Unit, supported by FWO. Her main clinical and research interests include complications of liver cirrhosis, including liver cancer. She is in charge of the cirrhosis clinic of the Ghent University Hospital. Together with nurse practitioner Lore Hoof, she aimes to further improve and streamline the care of cirrhotic patients, with specific focus on risk stratification and screening for complications like hepatocellular carcinoma.
