Research focus
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the commonly diagnosed types of cancer, with most deaths being associated with metastatic CRC. Multiple publications have shown a correlation between certain gut microbes and colorectal tumours; however, we are still learning how these bacteria are able to interact and exacerbate tumour growth. My research aims to understand the role of certain bacterial communication molecules called quorum sensing peptides (QSPs) in increasing metastasis and potentially promoting the formation of tumours. By understanding the interactions of QSPs, new drugs could be developed that inhibit their tumorigenic function or reduce their presence in the gut, which could potentially improve patient health and reduce the severity of this condition by delaying metastasis of CRC.
