On Tuesday April 23, New Scientist announced a list of 25 names competing for the title of Science Talent 2019. The jury and editorial staff of New Scientist made a selection of talents who will be part of the voting for the next two weeks. The public determines for 50 percent who wins. The other 50 percent comes from a jury chaired by Stan Gielen and Willy Verstraete (the chairmen of the NWO and FWO).

The five talents with the highest score present their research on 31 May in Utrecht during New Scientist Live.

For Ghent University, Heleen Dewitte and Bert Mesuere are nominated. Dr. Heleen Dewitte is a postdoctoral researcher at both UGent (CRIG) and VUB, focusing on the interface between nanotechnology and cancer immunology. In 2017, she received the biennial national prize from the Belgian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences for her doctorate on immunotherapeutic imaging for cancer vaccination. In 2016, she also won second prize in the first Flemish PhD cup. Heleen and her team are investigating ways to stimulate a cancer patient's own immune system to fight a tumor.
