Today, every hospital can perform almost all treatments. This will change from next year on, at least for esophageal and pancreatic cancer. Minister of Health Maggie De Block has decided that for complex esophageal and pancreatic surgery, only specialized hospitals that perform many of these procedures will be allowed to carry them out in the future. The initiative is expected to save lives, as research has shown that survival rates are higher in hospitals with more expertise and experience with specific procedures.
