Research focus

When a parent has cancer, the entire family is affected. Even though many children grow up with a parent with cancer, they often feel lonely and struggle with unmet needs. In the PhD project, supervised by prof. Liesbet Goubert, prof. Kim Beernaert and prof. Lesley Verhofstadt, we aim to shed light on the experiences and needs of Adolescents and Young Adults living with a parent with cancer. Driven by the pursuit of profound insights, we performed in-depth interviews on their experiences in the contexts of family life, healthcare and education. By these means, we hope to raise awareness, inform and provide practical guidance to practitioners in each of these contexts to better support this often-overlooked group.
