Research focus

My PhD research focuses on the implementation of patient reported outcome measures with digital support (ePROMs) in routine oncology care. This work is part of the Horizon Europe-funded MyPath project, an international collaboration across nine European sites that aims to strengthen patient centred cancer care through digital innovation.

In standard oncology practice, patients’ symptoms and care needs are not always captured systematically, despite their impact on quality of life and clinical decision making. My research examines how ePROMs can support continuous symptom monitoring, improve communication between patients and healthcare professionals, and facilitate shared decision making throughout the cancer care trajectory.

At the University Hospital Brussels, I focus on the local adaptation, implementation and evaluation of the MyPath ePROMs implementation. Using mixed methods research, including questionnaires and qualitative interviews, I study how patients and healthcare professionals use ePROMs in daily practice, and which factors influence their feasibility, acceptability and sustained use within the hospital oncology context.

By embedding digital symptom monitoring tools into clinical workflows, my research aims to support more patient centred oncology care and to generate practice based insights that can inform future implementation of ePROMs in cancer care.

Biography

Femke Van Landschoot is a PhD researcher at the End of Life Care Research Group at Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She holds a Master’s degree in Health Promotion (2024) from Ghent University and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), mixed-methods research, and implementation science in clinical cancer practice.

She is currently working on the Horizon Europe funded MyPath project, an international collaboration across nine European sites. Within this project, she focuses on the implementation and evaluation of digitally supported PROMs (ePROMs) in routine cancer care at the University Hospital Brussels.

Femke has experience with ePROMs, mixed methods research, including qualitative interviews and questionnaires, and collaborates closely with healthcare professionals and international research partners. Her work has been recognised with the Best Research Pitch Award at the VUB Oncology Research Centre Day 2025 and the Best Presentation Award at the PrIOMiC OncoPoint Symposium 2026.
