Research focus
Synthetic glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone and prednisolone, are critical in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma because of their ability to induce cancer cell death. However, their chronic use is limited by severe side effects, including osteoporosis, diabetes, fat redistribution and muscle wasting, as well as the development of treatment resistance.
To address these issues, we are developing novel glucocorticoid-based compounds with a different mode of action, focusing on their anti-inflammatory properties. The development of these new compounds is a collaborative effort between two laboratories
prof. K. De Bosscher: biology
prof. M. D’hooghe: organic synthesis.
