Research focus

RNA drugs such as mRNAs and siRNAs have emerged as a new class of drugs that can prevent diseases at the gene level via encoding the desired protein or inhibiting the expression of a targeted protein, respectively. In recent decades, there is a growing demand for developing safe and efficient non-viral vectors, such as cationic polymers and cationic lipids for RNA transfection due to several drawbacks (e.g., expensive, less payload and complicated delivery process) and risks (e.g., self-replication of virus that can damage the cell by producing additional infectious particles) associated with viral vectors. My current research project is centered on the preparation of novel cationic polymers for non-viral transfection of RNA.
 

Biography

Dr. Somdeb Jana is a postdoctoral researcher in the Supramolecular Chemistry (SC) group since October, 2020. He completed his BSc. (2011) and MSc. (2013) in chemistry from the University of Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. (2018) in polymer chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata, India, under the supervision of Prof. Tarun K. Mandal. His Ph.D. research work focused on the synthesis and self-assembly of poly(2-oxazoline)-based responsive copolymers. Before joining the SC group, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic with Dr. Mariusz Uchman, where his postdoctoral research work included the synthesis of responsive multi-compartment polymer micelles for dual drug delivery applications. His current research project is centered on the preparation of novel cationic (co)polymers for non-viral transfection of RNA.
