Research focus
Nearly ten percent of patients with colorectal cancer will develop metastases to the membrane lining our abdomen, the peritoneum. These metastases are difficult to treat, and are associated with a grim prognosis. In my research, we study the tumor microenvironment of peritoneal metastases, encompassing both cancer- and normal cells, on a single-cell and spatial level. We investigate the molecular drivers of peritoneal metastasis, uncover the communication networks in the tumor microenvironment, and accurately atlas this microenvironment in unprecedented detail.
To do this, we collaborate to use cutting-edge molecular biology techniques (single cell transcriptomics, spatial multi-omics) in combination with novel experimental models of peritoneal metastasis, to uncover mechanisms with translational potential. One of these mechanisms is recruitment of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs).
