Mission

The Oncology Commission has the following tasks:

  • Evaluating the multidisciplinary guidelines for the treatment of oncological patients
  • Organizing and guaranteeing the collaboration between Ghent University Hospital and the regional (basic) cancer care programs, home care services, primary care and palliative care organizations. In this way oncological patients can be followed from the moment of diagnosis until after treatment.
  • Organizing and guaranteeing multidisciplinary oncological consultations (MOCs) and adequate reporting, in addition to MOC’s budget control.
  • Monitoring and organizing quality promoting initiatives
  • Creating and updating a multidisciplinary oncological manual based on the most recent scientific findings. The manual includes all guidelines on the treatment of oncological patients.
  • Organizing and following up on the (basic) cancer care programs with which Ghent University Hospital has a collaboration.
  • Establishing and following up on one tumor working group per body organ, in which scientific and organizational topics as well as individual cases can be discussed. The group consists of all Ghent University Hospital clinicians that are directly and indirectly involved in the treatment of the specific disease. The working group gives advice about treatment protocols.
  • Referring patients with rare tumors that require complex treatments to specific care programs mentioned in the manual.
  • Guaranteeing that the center can rely on the most recent knowledge in the fields of medical genetics and molecular biology.
  • Organizing nursing and psychosocial support.
  • Supporting cancer registration and following up whether the multidisciplinary guidelines from the manual are implemented.
  •  Recommending the coordinator of the Cancer Center.
  • Appointing the executive committee.
