Research focus

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, and while treatments aim to control the disease, they can cause significant side effects that impact patients’ quality of life. Which brings us to the first part of our research: how can we better tailor prostate cancer treatment to each individual patient for optimal outcomes? I will study how medical (big) data can be used optimally, understandably, and trustworthy to better understand personalized treatment outcomes for prostate cancer radiation therapy.

The second part of my research focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven medical image analysis in both clinical and preclinical cancer research. In both settings, accurate segmentation of tumors and organs is essential for radiotherapy planning and for monitoring disease progression. In preclinical research, AI additionally contributes to the 3R principle by refining analysis through reduced inter- and intra-operator variability. It can also reduce animal use, since disease progression can be monitored more effectively with smaller experimental animal cohorts.

Overall, AI makes image analysis faster, more consistent, and less dependent on manual work, ultimately improving treatment planning, follow-up, and research efficiency.

Biography

Robine Janssen graduated as a Biomedical Engineer from Ghent University in 2025, where her master dissertation focused on inpainting sparse CT sinograms with AI to enable anatomical colocalization and attenuation correction for sparse PET scans. After graduation, she started her PhD at the MEDISIP research group of Ghent University, where she further explores AI applications in medical imaging.
