dr. Julie Kips (MD)

General practitioner
Doctoral fellow – Skin Cancer Research Institute Ghent (SkinCRIG) – Ghent University
Principal investigators: prof. Lieve Brochez (MD, PhD), prof. Evelien Verhaeghe (MD, PhD) and dr. Isabelle Hoorens (MD, PhD)
Research focus
This PhD is part of a broader focus on optimizing early skin cancer detection in the general population. This study examines the potential of AI-based technologies for triaging lesions requiring medical attention. While neural networks can match expert dermatologists in recognizing skin cancer from dermoscopic images in experimental settings, their real-world performance in collaboration with human users remains underexplored. Specifically, we investigate
1) the diagnostic accuracy and user acceptance of an mHealth app for skin cancer detection in a real-world setting and
2) healthcare professionals' interaction with a decision-support tool for skin cancer diagnosis.
