Research focus

The GRACE project focuses on improving the quality of life of women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who receive endocrine therapy. Endocrine therapy substantially reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence and is therefore an important component of breast cancer treatment. However, by reducing the effects of oestrogen, it can cause vulvovaginal atrophy, leading to symptoms such as vaginal dryness, irritation and pain during sexual activity. These symptoms can persist for years and have a significant impact on quality of life, sexual health, psychological well-being and intimate relationships. They may also make it more difficult for patients to continue endocrine therapy as prescribed.

The GRACE trial investigates different treatment strategies for vulvovaginal atrophy in women receiving endocrine therapy for breast cancer. The randomised clinical trial compares local oestrogen, dehydroepiandrosterone, non-hormonal moisturisers, and a combination of local oestrogen and probiotics.

The project addresses an important but often under-recognised aspect of cancer care: the management of long-term treatment-related side effects and the quality of life of cancer survivors. By generating evidence on the benefits and safety of different treatment approaches, the project aims to support personalised and evidence-based management of treatment-related symptoms. Ultimately, this can contribute to better survivorship care and help patients maintain both their quality of life and adherence to effective breast cancer treatment.
