Doctoral fellow – Laboratory of Experimental Cancer Research (LECR) – Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Ghent University
Principal Investigator: prof. An Hendrix (PhD)
Research focus
Bacteria secrete bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs), nanoscale membrane-bound particles that carry nucleic acids, metabolites, proteins, and endotoxins. My host laboratory recently discovered gut-derived BEVs in the bloodstream of patients with a disrupted intestinal barrier, including those with cancer (Tulkens et al., Gut, 2020).
During my PhD, I am investigating the characteristics of BEVs in human body fluids—specifically stool and blood samples from breast cancer patients—to elucidate the connection between BEV-associated microbial profiles and patient responses to cancer therapy.
