According to the jury of the Frans Van Cauwelaertprijs CRIG group leader Prof. An Hendrix performed groundbreaking research on extracellular vesicles that has important implications for the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of several diseases, including cancer. The jury further recognized the strong international character of her work, crucial for the standardization of her research domain.

Extracellular vesicles are little fragments shed by the cells of our organs and blood. Although their existence was proven long ago, their biological relevance remained elusive. Prof. An Hendrix could now show that extracellular vesicles of bacterial origin appear in the blood stream of patients with inflammatory diseases, underscoring their potential for understanding, detecting and controling disease processes.
