Research focus
The research of Robbe is dedicated to advancing surgical oncology through the innovative application of artificial intelligence. A significant challenge in cancer surgery is the precise identification and staging of disease during an operation, as current intraoperative methods often lack the objectivity and real-time feedback necessary for optimal decision-making. This can hinder accurate tumor removal and impact long-term patient outcomes.
To address this, the focus lies on developing novel optical biopsy systems, utilising advanced imaging technologies such as multispectral imaging combined with state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms. Unlike standard visual inspection with traditional RGB cameras, multispectral imaging captures detailed light information across numerous narrow wavelength bands, revealing subtle biochemical and morphological differences in tissues that are otherwise imperceptible. By harnessing these unique spectral signatures, the aim is to objectively and reliably differentiate cancerous from healthy tissue in real-time.
This interdisciplinary approach merges surgical insights with cutting-edge computer vision and AI techniques to create intelligent decision-support tools. The goal is to provide surgeons with immediate, precise guidance, thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy, optimising surgical strategies, and facilitating more complete tumor resections. This research embodies a commitment to developing trustworthy AI solutions that advance the frontiers of surgical practice and contribute broadly to advancing cancer patient care.
