prof. Pieter Van Vlierberghe laureate of the AstraZeneca Foundation Awards
CRIG group leader prof. Pieter Van Vlierberghe received an award - in the category 'epigenetics' (20 000 EUR) - from the AstraZeneca Foundation (in collaboration with FWO and FRS).
He was awarded for his research exploring novel treatment options for leukemia patients, with less toxic side effects than the current treatments with high doses of chemotherapy. Important insights were gained in the molecular mechanisms of leukemia development that are associated with epigenetic alterations in gene function. The reversible character of these alterations opens perspectives for therapeutic targeting in leukemia patients.
The other laureates were prof. Anne Spinewine (UCL) en prof. Evelien Smits (UAntwerpen)
