A consortium of 21 partners from 11 different countries, including the team of Prof. Pieter Mestdagh at Ghent University, recently kicked off their European Commission funded research project ‘individualized Paediatric Cure’ (iPC). The consortium received 15 million euro to support four years of research on individualized treatment plans for children with cancer. The core of the project is a comprehensive computational effort to combine knowledge-base, machine-learning, and mechanistic models to predict optimal standard and to propose experimental therapies for each child. In short, by collecting, standardizing and harmonizing existing clinical knowledge and medical data, the researchers will create treatment models for each patient with the help of artificial intelligence. These treatment models can help to evaluate treatment efficacy and toxicity thereby improving patient survival and quality of life.
