Research focus

Cervical cancers remains a major public health challenge and is in most  cases caused by Humaan Papillomavirus (HPV). Although HPV vaccination is offered free of charge to adolescents in the first year of secondary education, significant social inequalities persist in vaccination behavior and consequently in the incidence of HPV-related cancers and mortality. This PhD research aims to: (1) identify the  factors associated with HPV vaccination refusal, (2) Explain the existing social inequalities in HPV-vaccination and (3) develop recommendations or an intervention to improve HPV vaccination uptake among vulnerable populations.

In the first phase a large-scale survey about HPV vaccination behavior, sociodemographic information, knowledge, attitudes and school level determinants will be conducted among adolescents in Flanders and Brussels.
