The project investigates the hypothesis that breast irradiation in 5 fractions is equivalent to 15 fractions in terms of tumor control, survival, toxicity and quality of life, both in gland positive and gland negative patients. Also, the feasibility of preoperative radiotherapy in 5 fractions will be investigated. The preop setting will be used to defend knowledge about the mechanisms of radiotherapy-induced cell death which may help in the future to determine the ideal treatment sequence (first RT or first chemotherapy), the optimal interval between different treatments and determining good combinations of radiotherapy and systemic therapy. The hypothesis that extracellular vesicles can be used as biomarkers that can predict tumor response and side effects will also be investigated.
