Research focus
Bacteria release bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs), nanosized membrane-bound particles that transport a wide variety of molecules, including nucleic acids, metabolites, proteins, and endotoxins. In 2020, my host laboratory demonstrated, for the first time, that gut microbiota–derived BEVs can be detected in the bloodstream of patients with impaired intestinal barrier function, such as individuals with cancer or living with HIV (Tulkens et al., Gut, 2020). Building on this discovery and on my background in extracellular vesicle immune modulation, my postdoctoral project focuses on characterizing BEVs present in human body fluids, specifically stool and blood plasma samples, to better understand their molecular composition and functional impact within their physiological and pathological contexts.
